Brain Boosters-New Anagrams for 2011

You asked for it, so here it is-more anagrams! These are really such fun and great for your brain! You can do these by yourself, with a group, or compete against others. Whichever way you prefer, it really doesn’t matter as long as you work that brain.

By the way, have you exercised today? If not, don’t stress as the day isn’t over. Go take a walk. Medical professionals now recommend we each strive to walk 10,000 steps each day. I’ve hit mine-how about you? Everyone must incorporate some type of exercise into their life in order to achieve longevity and healthy again!  Physical exercise gets the blood flowing and circulating and that’s good for your brain and brain health.

I have my cup of green tea so yourself  grab a cup of green tea, coffee,  or hot cocoa with some spiced or plain walnuts, almondsdark chocolate, dark chocolate covered almonds-yummy, apple slices with cinnamon, strawberries, or blueberries and let’s workout. Let’s try more anagrams with a holiday theme. Remember, anagrams are a great brain exercise and they target problem solving skills, reasoning skills, thought organization, thought flexibility, judgment, and executive function skills. Anagrams are fun for everyone-teens, baby boomers, seniors. Anagrams are a fun brain building anti-aging activity to boost those brain cells, help form new neural pathways, and build your cognitive reserve. Try these anagrams as a family activity or part of a family game night, compete against friends or office co-workers and see who can find the most.  Enjoy, laugh, have fun-it’s good for all of us! Did you know that a  healthy heart helps us maintain a healthy mind and brain? Amazing, isn’t it?

Brain Boosters-Scrambled Words

As the day winds down, it’s a good time to reflect upon your day. What healthy foods did you eat? Have you had enough water? Did you take your vitamins and prescribed medications? Did you exercise?  Last but certainly not least, and my favorite of course-What did you do to exercise your brain?

I’ve eaten a brown rice cake with peanut butter, salad loaded with colorful vegetables dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil, blueberries, strawberries, a small square of dark chocolate, walnuts, chicken with fresh mushrooms, onions, and tomato sauce and garlic green beans. I’ve had about 75 ounces of water in addition to green tea, low sodium V-8, and unsweetened chocolate almond milk.

I exercised earlier and have logged over 10,000 steps on my pedometer. Today my brain exercises consisted of  a game of ScrabbleAlzheimer’s and dementia research, and  the development of more Brain Boosters.

Let’s try some scrambled words. These are great to help build your brain power and cognitive reserve. Scrambled words focus on problem solving, thought organization, thought flexibility, processing, reasoning skills, and executive function. Scrambled words are fun for all ages to enjoy. Make it a family activity or make it a  friendly competition. The important thing is that you’re working your brain,  building new neuro pathways and taking advantage of our brain’s plasticity. Keep trying new activities as this helps challenge the brain. By caring for and maintaining your brain and body, you are on your way to healthy aging, longevity, fighting Alzheimer’s and dementia, and improving your quality of life!  Don’t we all want to maintain our independence and age in place? So, dive in and make a commitment to become a lifelong learner!

Brain Boosters-Word Beads

Try these Word Beads that we have created. These are are great for exercising your brain. Word Beads focus on thought organization, problem solving, reasoning, memory skills, thought flexibility, and executive function. By making brain fitness activities a priority, you are taking positive steps toward healthy aging while improving your brain function and overall thinking skills. Healthy aging and longevity include beefing  up your brain power by taking advantage  of  brain or neuro plasticity to create  new neuro pathways  to build your cognitive reserve. These activities are necessary to help stave off the development of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. Don’t forget about the physical exercise component as well! Physical exercise and a healthy diet aid in decreasing the risk for developing  other diseases such as diabetes, depression, high blood pressure-all of which have been linked to memory impairments. It is so important to remember that we must take care of and maintain of brains and bodies to achieve a long and healthy life.  Remember, if something is good for your heart then it’s good for your brain, and if it’s good for your brain then it’s good for your heart.

Here are some useful tips to keep in mind: drink water; cut down on your salt intake and watch out for hidden salt; season your food with lots of fresh herbs and spices; eats fruits and vegetables, healthy oils like olive oil; eat lean protein including fish with omega 3′s like salmon, shrimp, halibut; eat nuts-walnuts, peanuts, almonds; enjoy a little bit of dark chocolate and alcohol. Try green tea if you haven’t already. Green tea is delicious and has so many health benefits for your brain and your body! Decrease your intake of sugar!  Can you honestly think of any health benefits from white sugar?  Of course, we recommend you check with your physician as to which vitamins and supplements are best for you.

So, before we get busy exercising our brains, go grab some water, green tea, hot cocoa with a handful of walnuts, almonds, apple slices, blueberries, or perhaps strawberries. Of course you know by now that I’ve got my cup of green tea and a handful of dark chocolate covered almonds. Now we’re ready!

We present Word Beads. Use the following string of  letters to create as many  words as you can. The letters must remain in the order presented but can be separated within the word. Here is an example-STR. STORE, STARE, AIRSTRIP, etc…….

Brain Boosters-Word Plugs

Today is day 3 of  snowed in and  no school. So excited that tomorrow is also a snow day.  The only bright spot is that we have power. It’s always more tolerable with heat and electricity! Since we’ve been stranded at home, I’ve developed some new Brain Boosters to help build your brain power and cognitive reserve.

I’ve named these Word Plugs. Word Plugs focus on thought organization skills, thought flexibility, problem solving, executive function, processing, reasoning, and logic. Today Word Plugs have been tested on my teenage daughter and middle agedbaby boomer husband. They both gave it 2  thumbs up! These Word Plugs are great for teens to seniors as another brain fitness activity for anti-aging. Take advantage of the brain’s plasticity and ability to new learn new information. Become a lifelong learner-you’re never too young or too old for new learning! So, if you are looking for something new to try to form those  new neural pathways to help fight Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia definitely try your hand at these.

By the way, isn’t 2011 the year you committed to  your health? Of course, it is! That’s everyone’s goal! No healthy goal is complete unless you have a brain fitness component. Be sure you’re eating all the right foods-the omega 3’s, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, healthy grains, water, lean proteins, plenty of fresh herbs and spices. Also, be sure you’re getting adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals-Vitamin D, Vitamin B’s, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, iron. As always, check with your physician for the right amount of supplements for your individual needs.

As you know, I have my cup of green tea and am ready to go! Now, I present you with Word Plugs. You will be presented with words that are missing letters. Now that I’ve exercised today-took my canine child for a nice long walk. She needs exercise too! Now it’s time for some brain exercising to form those new neural pathways and add to my cognitive reserve. Of course, I have my green tea as I consume at least 6 cups per day. Did you realize that green tea is not only delicious but is good for your overall health? Green tea has been shown to help decrease your risk of developing certain cancers. Green tea is also good for your heart, and remember if something is good for your heart than it’s also good for your brain! So I say-drink up!

Scrambled words are another fun way to help build that cognitive reserve while decreasing your risk for dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.  Scrambled words are excellent for people of all ages!  If you’ve never tried unscrambling words, then there is no time like the present. Remember I always say that we are never too old for new learning and never too young to begin building our cognitive reserve! Word games are superb tools to improve cognitive skills! We are back and ready to help you exercise and maintain your brain! Are you remembering to do your daily breathing technique to improve your memory skills?
